There are a number of things that must be included within a psychological experiment in order for the experiment to be considered ethical. This includes informing participants of what is done within the experiment (whether it be discussed before or after), ensuring no mental or physical harm comes to the participants at any time during the experiment, and allowing the participants to withdrawal themselves and their data from the experiment whenever they wish. The way these ethical requirements are discovered is through looking at prior unethical experiments. Some of the most famous and influential psychological experiments today are actually considered highly unethical in hindsight, such as the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Little Albert Experiment.
2. The Secret Sixth Sense
Humans typically are regarded as having five common senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. However, there is another sense that is not as widely talked about. Proprioception is a vital component of our everyday lives, it's the ability to tell where are limbs and body are in any given space. This secret sense allows us to walk with having to watch our feet, find our way even in the dark, and perform all kinds of simple tasks without having to pay close attention to where out limbs are at any given time. Proprioception relies on one receptor known as piezo2, which helps connect the nervous system with our conscious awareness.
3. The Amygdala
While the brain is made up of a number of different important sections and receptors one of the most vital parts of the brain is the amygdala. The amygdala is a very small area of the brain that is responsible for handling episodic memory and recognition of threats. Essentially, the amygdala ensures that a person is able to recognize when something or someone may hurt them based on prior experiences. Without a (or with a damaged) amygdala a person may grow less aggressive (as they're fight or flight response will be hindered) however they will be less likely to recognize potential threats and as such are more susceptible to danger. The amygdala is essential for someone to live their lives safely.
