Biological Pillar Steve shows signs of conciousness and desire throughout the movie, which is explained through the talking device Flint taped to his chest. Steve exclaims he is "excited!" when the cheeseburger rain begins and that he's "hungry" when Flint is first testing the device. While Steve does not have a very intelligent conciousness he does have a conciousness and through that he is able to desire things and feel things. Cognition Pillar Flint desires to be liked by those around him and to be appreciated for what he creates. This is why he likes Sam so much when she starts complementing what he's created. Why he gives in to the Mayor's request to continue the rain and work with him once the Mayor promises him that the whole town will adore him. Why he helps Cal's dad despite the fact that the machine is edging into the danger zone. He wants other people's perceptions of him to be positive and in order to obtain this he gives in to what they ask of him. He's particularly desperate for his dad's positive perception of him and gets upset when he cannot obtain it due to his dad not having a positive perception of Flint's work. Life Span Development and Learning Pillar Flint only learns that he can't take off his stick-on shoes once someone points out the problem and he tries. This is connected to learning because people can only learn things through experience. Flint could not have known his stick-on shoes would not be removable until he tested them. Social and Personality Pillar Sam Sparks is shown to change her behavior to fit in and conform more with the people around her. Whenever she says something smart, particulerly scientific, she always covers it up with a "dumbed down" version. Such as when Sam rambles about how the machine must work due to the moisture in cumulonimbus clouds and then quickly backtracks and simply says "wow, it must have worked because water is in the clouds!" She does this because she believes she will be looked down on for being smart after being bullied for it as a kid. Mental and Physical Health Pillar Flint is upset about the teasing he's faced until his Mother encourages him. This shows a connection to mental health because often a person needs support from those around them during hard times. Flint's Mother helps bring him out of his sadness by being there for him, which is often what people suffering from poor mental health need.
